When am I no longer considered a tourist?

addistahler

I’ve officially been living in Italy for over a week, and I’m just starting to get my bearings. I know it’s only been a week, but I will never take air conditioning for granted again. Despite that, I am loving it here - this week alone I saw the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, the Colosseum, and Florence. Also fun fact, the Pope is my neighbor so that’s cool. This weekend I took the train with two of my best friends, and we were able to see the statue of David, visit the Gucci Gardens, shop and visit the leather market while in Florence. Florence was too much fun, it was quick 48 hours but totally worth only getting three hours of sleep! In Florence, I had the best steak I’ve ever had - I will be mad if you go to Florence and don’t get it! (Acqua al 2 for anyone interested) However, I did hit a milestone while in Italy this week - I discovered I like red wine, so now I can really fit in. This coming weekend I am traveling to Sardinia, Italy with a few friends, I'll update you next week on how that goes.

Even though I did have a super busy week, I can assuredly say that if you are on the fence about studying abroad, you should definitely do it. It may be hard, but it is surely worth the challenge. Getting to see the world and how differently other people live might be the coolest thing I have experienced yet. Despite all this, I am still getting used to walking everywhere, the utter lack of air conditioning, and not having ice, but seeing all of the gorgeous buildings, eating the amazing food and making the once in a life time memories, sure makes up for it. I will say there is one question I can’t help but keep asking myself:

When can I no longer be considered a tourist?

Ciao!

P.S. Check out my travel page for recommendations if you ever find yourself traveling to Rome or Florence - I’ll be updating it over the coming months as I continue on with my travels!
